Veterinarians Wayne Freese and Craig Pfeifer, the co-founders of Worthington, Minnesota-based Veterinary Medical Center, decided more than 20 years ago to expand their business offerings to include nutritional programs and management, biologics, and diagnostics for the veterinary industry.
When they created Prairie Holdings Group over a decade ago, they believed with the business world changing that their southwest Minnesota businesses must adapt to keep up and prosper.
As part of its adaptation efforts, Prairie Holdings Group teamed with SalesPad Innovates to initiate a different approach for an everyday solution with technology driven innovation.
Prairie Holdings Group's veterinarians writes prescriptions to animal owners with explicit instructions and warnings on how to administer those drugs.
In October 2015, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) rule went into effect. It placed new federal requirements on how drugs are used in animal feed, regulations forcing Prairie Holdings to use a new special document for prescriptions.
With there being limited choices to craft the new VFD documents to meet the new FDA standards, Prairie Holdings found it needed a better way. In seeking an alternative, Prairie Holdings worked with SalesPad on its idea to automate creation of the documents and cut more expensive and costly alternatives out.
“TECHNOLOGY USUALLY DRIVES INNOVATION, AND TECHNOLOGY IN AGRICULTURE IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING. “ALONG WITH TECHNOLOGY COMES THE ABILITY TO LOWER COSTS, AND THIS TECHNOLOGY IS USUALLY THE DRIVER BEHIND CHANGE,” DR. WAYNE FREESE SAID.
By following FDA guidance and a specially-tailored flowchat, SalesPad designed a customized screen in SalesPad Desktop that allows selection of more than 20 conditions, including the animal’s species and size, drug name, and the disease being treated. A combination of selections yields appropriate warnings and instructions in a way that is informative and FDA approved.
The change allowed Prairie Holdings to continue to operate independently while maintaining the integrity and quality it is known for.
While the partnership accomplished efficiency and cost savings in an everday operation, the idea of finding a digital solution is not a foreign concept. Groundbreaking opportunities await any business willing to grasp hold the reigns of technology.
